Tuesday: Communist-Free Reds

Hi folks, welcome back to HJC for the Tuesday post. About 90% of the offseason happened in the last 7 days, in terms of both jerseys AND roster moves, and we'll be breaking it all down on the latest episode of the Jersey Nerds podcast. This is one you won't want to miss. Check it out on the podcast-streaming network of your choice.

Have you voted yet for COTW? If not, you should. There's a certain concept I'm sure you'll be howling for (nudge nudge wink wink).

Ben M.- Carolina Hurricanes

Our first concept of the day comes from Ben (no relation), and already to me this is an upgrade over Adidas's offering. The striping is classic hockey, and looks like it belongs on the ice. The yoke is problematic, however, with it extending behind the nameplate on the back. When worn, the eye will assume it's symmetrical over the shoulders, and having it draped so far down the back will make it look like the seamstress made a mistake. The logo is clever, and the C, H, and warning flag subtly woven in, though the warning flag is perhaps too obscure behind the C. The current logo makes a good shoulder patch, and fittingly incorporated into the alternate look. The split Adidas collar has never looked good to me, and the off color pentagon and inside blank ring make it even more chaotic. Italicized numbers and names can be a bit of a hit or miss, but the Canes can certainly pull this look off with their angled primary logo.

Grade: C+

Brooks F.- Grand Rapids Griffins

Brooks wants to take Grand Rapids in a new direction with a complete rebrand. Being a concept artist myself, I understand that it takes going the extra mile to go with custom logos in addition to the jersey, which is why we rarely see them. Brooks does a commendable job with the primary, though to nitpick, the talon and paw are are far too under-detailed. The secondary logo falls short; the biggest issue is the text within the roundel being far too small to be visible from the seats. It's also redundant with the GRG in the center. The jerseys are modern and the design is expressive, but grounded enough with symmetry that it's not avant garde. The symmetry is especially of note because the lines of axis cross on the crest, emphasizing the logo. The color choice is a wide departure from the current team identity and, but the colors are well-balanced and used well between the logo and jerseys, complimenting each other, so it's not too far of a stretch to work. I recognize this concept from the team's jersey competition, in which they made explicit only a jersey would be produced. That said, it still would have been interesting to see matching equipment as an HJC concept.

Grade: B-

Lucas D.- Cleveland Indians

Our last concept of the day comes from Lucas, whose MLB crossover series makes it way to the city I work in. Cleveland's primary logo is... controversial, to say the least, so moving to the block C for a concept makes complete sense. My problem with this, however, is the block C is too bland, and the addition of the feather isn't enough to compensate. The design ties into the Indians' existing look, though the blue stripes between the white and red are too thin to be meaningful. As I've lamented on in the past, red pants do not work with blue jerseys (coughcoughcolumbuscoughcough). The heavier blue over the lighter red makes a top-heavy, unbalanced look. This is even less effective on the white jersey, with the red pants and blue yoke fighting to be the dominate color, rather than working together. Lastly, Lucas provides his usual textbook example of how to execute an error-free jersey concept.

Grade: D+
