On Saturday, I went to Maple Leaf Gardens which is now a grocery store (Loblaws). Maple Leaf Gardens is/was one of my most favourite places in the world. How Canadiens fans feel about the Forum, how Hawks fans feel about Chicago Stadium, how Rangers fans feel about MSG, etc., that's how I felt about the Gardens. The outside is still very recognizable and the best part is that they have built a new marquee out front to replicate how it looked in the 60's and 70's.
The inside hardly resembles the glory and character the shrine once had. The grocery store itself is fantastic though. The location of centre ice is commemorated with a dot at its former location. Which is in an aisle surrounded by butter chicken sauce and Spam.
The Gardens tried to sell off the seats (I got one), but many did not sell. So you can find some of them along a wall as a place to sit in the cafe. Or you will find most of them on a wall made into a cool blue maple leaf art piece.
Even your receipt reminds you of the historic building in which you just shopped.
Above the grocery store is the Mattamy Athletic Centre used for Ryerson University. The ice rink there was the coolest part of this whole trip. With only just over 2700 seats, they did a great job arranging them in a manner that resembled MLG's seating plan. Not just the seats, but the location of the tunnels as well as where the Zamboni door is located (visitor's end boards). Seeing the roof again was kind of a thrill for me.

Cool photos Ryan. For those of us out in the West who only saw the Garden on TV (I still say it and the Forum had the best ambiance for a hockey game), it is cool to know that it is still around in some form.
I agreed with you on the Jets jerseys, I think the jerseys will look fine with just the V-neck.
here's a question.
Who's the most underrated HJC contributors? (one that was so close in winning the COTW to a good concept the didn't get a good amount of COTW nom)
This is awesome! Thanks again guys.
I disagree on the Jets, not because I am a Jets fan, but because I think the jerseys look better with them...and we'll continue to agree to disagree on the Islanders thrid jersey!
Next podcast questions: what do you think of the re-alignment?
Not going to lie, this Tigers competition is the hardest to vote. Easily the best set of entries I've seen for a contest since I started coming to this site, this won't be easy. Good job everyone!
I went to Toronto this summer with my parents and grandparents. After seeing a couple of Blue Jays games, we did stop by the Maple Leaf Gardens site. It was sort of sad to see such a legendary hockey place turned into a grocery store, but was very nice. I have the same sort of photos with my dad & I. Very cool Ryan.
I actually went to the bar across the streets when i visited this past summer, terrible bar.
