Friday: Look at All Those Concepts!

Hey y'all, welcome to another Friday post here at HJC.  As you may have noticed, we have had an increase in concepts per post this past week, which has brought us back into our usual stride.  While I can't take sole credit for this, I like to think that my call to arms last week had something to do with it.

On that bombshell, I will now bring you my commandments, which conveniently have been condensed to only three. Commandment the First: Thou shalt vote for Concept of the Week for the week of November the Seventeenth to November the Twenty-Seventh, which endeth Friday at noon Eastern Standard Time.  Commandment the Second: Thou shalt vote for thine favorite entries into the Islanders ReDesign Competition, which also endeth Friday at noon Eastern Standard Time.  Commandment the Third: Thou shalt continue to submit concepts for thine day of judgment in order to preserve the divine faith of HJC.

Now on to today's concepts!

Burkus Circus- New York Islanders

Our first concept of the day is Burkus Circus' entry into our Islanders redesign competition.  I'm always a sucker for a white yoke, and the white cuffs help break up the navy even more.  While I do like drawing from the Fisherman era's wave striping pattern, the thin lines used in this design make it look more like tiger stripes.  The recolored lighthouse logo actually looks pretty good, but I don't know if it's strong enough for a primary crest.  While I do think a more minimal hem stripe was a good call here, I'm not a fan of the striping on the breezers matching the hem stripe instead of the arm and socks.  While I applaud you for attempting to design your own shoulder patch, this Frankenstein mashup of the Fisherman font and the "Brooklyn Black" Alt logo just does not look good, it's especially sloppy on the stick section of the Y.  I do like the design on the glove, but you lose me by making the top half all white, and the helmet is a different shade of blue than the rest of the set.  You did a good job on execution of the TV numbers, but none of your fonts seem to match each other and that bothers me.  Finally, and I think the most egregious sin of all, is that you fell into Adidas' trap of the split collar   Final verdict: the idea is there, but there's a lot more that needs to be done to save this concept.  5/10

Jets96- Anaheim Ducks

Our next concept comes from our very own Jets96, with a design that brings the Mighty moniker back to the Ducks.  This one hits me right in the childhood, and I love it.  I grew up watching the Ducks in eggplant and jade, so I'm always happy to see a return to this color scheme.  I really like the more traditional striping pattern on this, anyone who knows my designs knows that I definitely use a more classic style when it comes to my concepts.  I like the yoke striping, but I'm confused as to why it's flipped when compared to the rest of the striping.  Great logo choices and the font also looks nice.  While I like that the striping on the gloves and breezers matches, the fact that it doesn't match the main set seems a little off to me.  The silver and white in the striping on the home set are too close in shade, causing them to bleed, and I'm not quite sure that I'm sold on jade for a primary jersey instead of the traditional eggplant.  Final verdict: not a bad looking set, but not the best revival of jade and eggplant that I've seen.  7/10

Joe D.- Anaheim Ducks

Our second ducks concept of the day comes to us from Joe D.  Joe does a good job here of keeping the gold and orange separate, a move that I think helps distract the eye from such an awful color scheme.  I love the OC shoulder patch, but I probably would have made the interior of the text white, just to make it pop a little more.  I like the contrasting upper arm and simple striping pattern, it's a minimal and sleek look that I think works well for the Ducks.  The mismatched sock striping doesn't work for me, I probably would have flipped the arm striping upside down and made the bottom of the sock black.  In terms of execution, the main crest seems a little small considering there's no real hem stripe, and the numbers on the back are spaced way too far apart.  Final verdict: a good looking set, but some design choices hold it back.  8/10 

Nick B.- Montreal Canadiens

Our next concept is the first of two from Nick B. today, this one for the Montreal Canadiens.  First things first, I love this template.  At first I was unsure what to make of it, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.  That being said, a flashy template does not a great concept make.  This design is essentially just a mashup of Montreal's current home and away, taking the hem stripe from the away and applying it like the chest stripe on the home set.  While it's not a bad look, I've seen it done a hundred times over.  Taking an old design and putting it on a new template is one of my personal pet peeves, so maybe I'm just being a little picky about this.  Final verdict: it looks great, but there's just no creativity here.  6/10

Nick B.- New York Islanders

Noah K.- Graveyard Banshees

Our final concept of the day is Noah K.'s latest entry in his Kings Island Hockey League series, this time for the Graveyard Banshees.  I had to do a little research to figure out what exactly this was for, but in doing so I found the level of commitment that went into this design, for which I must commend Noah.  The sublimated celtic knot striping pattern and shoulder patch are a great way to pay homage to the lore of the mythological Banshee, and it actually works pretty well as a striping pattern. The color scheme does a good job of bringing in the colors from the logo, so good work there.  Font choice is good and the "24 Million" is a nice nod to the cost of construction of the ride, but the main crest on the front is a little large.  My main problem on this set is the complete lack of color balance, as the dark set has all the color while the light is completely devoid of any whatsoever.  The best way that I can see to fix this is to make the striping on the light set purple and the yoke blue, while making the striping on the dark set silver.  Also, I would use the purple breezers for both sets.  Final verdict: good attention to the backstory, but the lack of color balance really kills this concept.  6.5/10
