Remembrance Day Jersey Summary

Every year, various teams in all levels of hockey ranging from major junior to the NHL honour troops pas and present this time of year as part of the larger Remembrance/Armistice/Veterans day traditions across Canada and the United States. Teams will either use this time to hold their Salute the Troops night and/or to specifically make jerseys for Remembrance Day, poppies and all.

Obviously these jerseys are for a great cause and every team should be commended for supporting the troops (often these jerseys are auctioned off and given to Veteran's charities). Let's take a look at some of the more interesting jerseys:

Texas Stars (AHL)

The Texas Stars have never been afraid to don the Stars and Stripes, as since 2012-13, the team has worn the red, white and blue, usually covered in stars. This year, the team has gone asymmetrical on the arms, one for stars and one for bars, a recoloured version of their Texas flag shoulder patch as the primary, and some very colourful and interesting socks! Safe to say these jerseys caught the attention of fans!

Brampton Beast (ECHL)

The ECHL's only Canadian team went the patriotic route, giving the Beast a bright red jersey with their trademark black yoke. The logo is backed by a maple leaf and poppy on the right arm of the werewolf, underneath the fitting Lest We Forget quote. The arms feature a sublimated pair of photos from World War I on the arms of the jersey, marked with a maple leaf in the genre of the top arm stripes.

Swift Current Broncos (WHL)

The Broncos went for the remembrance day theme for these World War I tribute jerseys, featuring a stunning primary logo of a soldier, and sublimated poppy over the heart in lieu of the captain's C, now moved to the right side. The jersey was designed by Taylor Vause (@wizardofvause on twitter), who has done lots of work for the Broncos since their rebrand, as well as the Texas Stars, Colorado Eagles as well as other minor league teams. Check out his portfolio here!

Oshawa Generals (OHL)

For those who don't know, this year is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a major part of Canadian History and World War I in general. The Oshawa Generals went above and beyond with these tributes, not only featuring a camouflage jersey with a detailed maple lead pattern on the arms, but a waving Canadian Flag and actual photos of Canadian soldiers sublimated into the hem and the Vimy Ridge Memorial Monument on the right side of the jersey.

Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)

Another American team, the reigning WHL champs held their Salute the Troops night against Kamloops Blazers this weekend. The jerseys worn by the team stand out amongst the myriad of camouflage jerseys found this weekend not only due to the colour, but the fact they also worked the Anaheim Ducks style arm and side striping with the camo, making it one of the few camo jerseys that does this with team colours!

Here are some other minor league and major junior teams that wore military appreciation/remembrance day jerseys this weekend:

Never, ever, ever refer to the American flag as "The Stars and Bars". The American flag is "The Stars and Stripes". The Stars and Bars was the flag of the Confederate States of America is the US Civil War. It can be associated with racism.
