Friday: Slim Pickings
Hey y'all, welcome to another Friday post here at HJC. As some of you may have noticed, we've been posting fewer concepts than usual. This disappoints me as both a writer and a reader, as I enjoy being able to see as many artists' ideas as possible. It allows me both to appreciate other artists' designs that I could never have dreamed of, and it gives me inspiration for my won future concepts. This site is note just a webpage, it's a community where artists can grow together and lift each other up, constantly raising the bar the way that only a shared passion and a sense of competitiveness can. As such, it's on us to keep sending in concepts so that we can inspire each other. This is my call to arms, brothers. Only by increasing the number of concepts sent in can we keep pushing each other to design better and better concepts. If you're just a reader and don't design your own concepts, give it a try. Our tutorials page offers a great guide to get you started. I started out this way and now I'm on staff here at HJC, so I speak from experience. You never know where it can go, it can take something you like to look at, and spark an interest for design that could turn into a passion.

Now on to today's concepts!
Matt G.- LA Kings
Our first design of the day is Matt G.'s design from our recent Kings ReDesign Competition. Right off the bat, I love the layout of this concept, it's really well done and looks pretty professional. The redesigned primary logo looks great, it's simple, sleek, and ties in with some of their older designs well. The simplified crown looks good as well, as much as I love the more intricate crown designs, they're a nightmare as a secondary logo. The primary set is a good combination of the Gretzky era design and the original forum blue and gold color scheme. The font looks good and matches the redone LA logo very well. My only real wish is that you had included a shoulder patch, either the crown or the LA text made to look something like the 2014 Stadium Series shoulder patch. The home alternate is a direct copy of the Kings' 90s look with a sleeker looking version of the original crest from that set and the TV numbers moved from the striping to the upper arm. I like the new main crest, but I do think that the TV numbers is in the striping were a good look for this design that should have stayed. The away alternate is a good nod to the original yellow set, but I just don't think that that new shade of gold works as well as the original yellow. I love the inclusion of fan apparel and marketing ties, but I would stay away from "Stay Gold" to avoid paying royalties to S.E. Hinton. Final verdict: a great look on the primaries and one alternate, and presentation is gorgeous. 9.5/10 and my COTW NOMINEE!!!!!
Noah B.- Melbourne Demons
Next up is another entry in Noah B.'s AFL series, this time a design for the Melbourne Devils. The striping here is a great way to incorporate the Demons' current look, while also making it look like a hockey uniform. The Interlocking letters logo looks good as a primary and is definitely better than the alternative, but it kind of bugs me that it still has the "F" for football. Both jerseys look great, but from a hockey perspective, these are a primary and a third, and there is no white jersey. This may work in leagues that offer a primary/clash, but hockey has no such system. That being said, I wouldn't mind this if that ever did become a standard uniform system. Final verdict: a good looking set, but I have to dock you for not having a white jersey. 8.5/10
That's all for me this week, be sure to start cranking out those concepts so we can all enjoy more in the future. See y'all next Friday!
