Friday: Nike Must Be Stopped
Hey y'all, and welcome to another Friday post at HJC. As most of y'all probably learned from our news story yesterday, Nike has released the uniforms for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
They are... just plain awful. The only real saving grace in all of these is Sweden, who may have well just put a giant middle finger to Nike on their jersey. Everyone else has fallen prey to the horrid geometric pattern as their "striping". While they would work well as long sleeved soccer jerseys, they have no place on the ice. Nike needs to just admit that they have no idea what they're doing in hockey design, and that they need to just stick to the sports that they know. Their attempts to bring "cutting edge" designs into hockey has fallen flat, and they seem to have no clue as to what the hockey community looks for in a uniform. I think their main problem is that they are trying to "Nike-fy" hockey uniforms instead of adapting Nike design style to hockey, which is why they're never going to understand where they're going wrong. Other companies like Reebok and Adidas were able to make decent looking uniforms because they made sure to adapt their designs to existing jersey styles instead of the other way around. Nike just doesn't seem to get that, and until they do, their designs are just going to keep getting worse and worse until the hockey community finally converges on Beaverton and takes back hockey design. Now is our time, comrades! We must rise up and overthrow the Nike manufacturers before all hope is lost!
In voting news, we have the regular COTW vote from October 27-November 2, as well as the LA Kings ReDesign Top 3 Vote, both of which close Friday at noon EST.

Now on to today's concepts!
Brooks F.- Team North America
Our first design of the day is Brooks F.'s latest entry in his Continents Cup series, this one for North America. I really like the logo for this team, it does a great job of combining the identities of the U.S. and Canada. I also like the use of the maple leaf and the star at the ends of the sleeves, it complements the main crest well. The consistent striping across the set looks good, and the contrasting cuffs and hem on the away do a good job of helping the color(?) balance. My main issue with this set is the lack of color. At first I thought I had accidentally downloaded it in monochrome, and the lack of color really just ends up making it a bland looking concept. Final verdict: a good concept, but the lack of color really drags it down. 7.5/10
Cole W.- Everett Silvertips
Next up is Cole W. with a design for the Everett Silvertips of the WHL. This is almost a direct copy of their current set, with some minor changes. The change of the yoke on the white jersey from green to grey is a definite downgrade, as the grey isn't far enough from the white to actually look like a colored yoke. While the new striping may be more geographically correct for the region, the current striping pattern looks much better and does a better job of incorporating the team's color scheme. I will give you credit for trying to incorporate the striping into the gear, but I don't think it looks as good in practice as their current solution. Final verdict: a derivative concept that doesn't work as well as the original. 5/10
Lucas D.- Winnipeg Jets
Our final concept of the day is Lucas D.'s design for the Winnipeg Jets. I love the use of consistent striping and arms across the set, it keeps them uniform while making the two jerseys completely distinct. The ability to pull this off and make it look good is a rare skill, and I commend Lucas for doing it so well. The contrasting upper arm and hem look great on the away, and the contrasting cuffs and hem on the home do a good job of helping the color balance. Logos and numbers look good, and the gear works well. The only detraction I have is the missing shoulder patches on the 3D rendering. Other than that, it's a great set. Final verdict: a phenomenal looking set for the Jets that I wouldn't mind seeing on the ice. 9.5/10 and my COTW NOMINEE!!!!!
That's all for me today, see y'all next week!

Second Lucas' Jets for COTW
I would buy the entire set of Matt G’s Kings redesigns. They’re beautiful!
Tbh, the Nike designs aren't that bad. Sure the sublimated sleeve designs don't appeal to you and others but at least it doesn't apply to the body of the jersey. Still, I have to agree with Sweden, although too simple for me. As for the others, some worked well like Germany, Switzerland and Slovenia and others obviously don't work well like the USA, Canada and Russia (It is soo goddamn plain!) I hope the equipment changes that because that is what made most concepts stand out.
On the plus side, I might be able to fix these jerseys.
