Thursday: Extra, Extra, Red All About It!

Thursday, Thursday, Thursday. Welcome to another daily post here on HJC.

On Tuesday, Ottawa and Montreal shared their NHL 100 Classic designs with the hockey world. Seeing as we are beginning to run low on concept submissions, I thought I'd share my thoughts on those jerseys in addition to today's two concepts.

Retrieved from: NHL.com
Montreal Canadiens:
Montreal gives us a pretty straightforward look with their road sweater's hem stripes moving to the arms and split by a silver stripe with the organization's cup years indented rather than the typical white. While nice to see Adidas tie back to last year's Centennial classic, but the silver doesn't work to well with the Canadiens' scheme. In true Canadien's fashion, the design team failed to match the hem stripes to those on the arms (which is frustrating, but excusable given their identity). Look it up, in the Canadien's entire uniform history they have not once matched hem and arm striping. The inner collar includes an excerpt from "In Flander's Fields", a Poem known for its a association with Remembrance Day and the Team Motto of the Canadiens.
Overall: 7.0/10.

Ottawa Senators:
Ottawa steals a page from Montreal's book, adopting a chest stripe in their design. Again, a silver stripe emblazoned with cup years splits the main striping pattern of the jerseys; here a noticeable callback to the popular barber-pole jerseys that we may see again in the near future. Ottawa gives us a slightly new look Adidas collar with silver, white and black all utilized. In this look, the silver falls even flatter as it nearly disappears into the white and will be all but invisible from stadium distance
Overall: 6.5/10.

HJC NEWS:
Jersey Casual shirts are still being sold on Redbubble. I'm about to pick up a current Penguins look for myself and I encourage you to do the same with your favorite look. While your at it, find yourself a toonie (or about $1.60 USD) and pick up an HJC sticker for all your sticking needs. Both can be found in the SHOP tab at the top of the page.

Don't forget to keep working on your Isle's Comp entries. The submission window for those closes in just over a week, so you've still got plenty of time if you've yet to start.

Be sure to cast your both in both the October Monthly and November Week 1 COTW votes before those polls close tomorrow. Lot's of deserving concepts, so let your voice be heard.

COTW-October Vote (Ends Friday @ noon EST)
COTW NOV 3-9 Vote (Ends Friday @ noon EST)
NYI ReDesign Comp Entries (due Nov 24 @ noon EST)

On to the Concepts!
_____________________________________________________________________________

Jordan R.- Die Adler Mannheim

The Good:
  • First off, this layout is fantastic. Wonderful way to see a realistic view of the jersey while still representing the main set
  • New logo is a wonderful update for Die Adler Mannheim, who currently sport a rather odd look with their logo on the hem stripe
  • Striping on the white maintains the hierarchy of blue over red, something they miss on their current set
  • Following the NBA's lead with coloring ads to match the colors of the uniform to keep them from being to ProMinent (pardon the pun, Phil...)
  • On this weeks podcast (check it out here if you haven't already) the team discussed their unpopular jersey design opinion. Mine is that shoulder number's are a great look, so I am happy to see them here
The Bad:
  • Although neither is ornithologically correct, I think red makes more sense as a beak color than blue (see their current look)
  • While the design is a good look, its basically a recoloring of the Oilers alternate from last year
The Ugly (Execution Issues):
  • Way too much spacing between NOB and #OB
  • I may be the only one bothered by this, but you have the 3D mock-up ordered White-Blue-Red while the full bod looks are ordered White-Red-Blue
  •  Sponsor logos should be cited per HJC's logo policy
Overall Rating: 6.0/10
A nice clean look for Die Adler Mannheim, but one already tried and tested by the Oilers which no amount of nice presentation can disguise.

Noah B.- Essendon Bombers

The Good:
  • Noah draws from Essendon's current chest sash look and adds grey in a quite welcome addition
  • Matching the Chest stripe on the arms helps balance the look and would keep the look from being one solid color from behind
  • Good moving isolating the sash on the front. If it carried over, numbers legibility would become an issue
  • Red road would certainly be a new look in a hockey atmosphere, but I like to see you drawing inspiration from the clash kits of the AFL

The Bad:
  • Would like to see the pants stripes outlined in grey to match the rest of the uniform

 Overall Rating: 9.25/10
What I've come to expect from you, Noah. Well designed and well executed

For the second week in a row, I extend my COTW Nomination to Noah, this time for his Bombers Concept.
What do you think? Should he take the crown again or was Jordan's a better look? Let us know in the comments.
