Thursday: The Calm after the Storm
Good afternoon, ladies and gents, and welcome to another Thursday here at HJC. After yesterday's full day of design news (included 3 stories on our site alone. Go check them out!), we have a bit slower of a day here at HJC. That being said, it's time for you to make some news of your own by entering our Kings redesign contest.
No new entries for today, but that just improves your chances.
Don't forget the COTW vote ends tomorrow as well.
Cole W.- Edmonton Oil Kings

Brooks F.- Team Europe
The Good:
- Brooks stars us off with a look along the lines of what I would've expected and would've preferred to see from team Europe at last years WCoH
- Primary logo is really well executed and pays a not so humble homage to both the euro symbol and the European Union flag
- Way to balance out a busy jersey with simplistic socks and pants...
- ...But I would like to see the pants striping match that of the home socks. There seems to be an unnecessary disconnect as is
- Wouldn't hate to see some white on the home jersey, though I see what you were going for
- #OB on the away suffers from YOWS and consistency of the set would be helped if the numbers were left one color
The Ugly (Execution Issues):
- Under-armor logo looks large on the back
- Numbers on the dark uniform are quite large (certainly larger than they are on the blue uniform)
A well thought-out and well executed look for the gentlemen from across the pond.
The Good:
- Home jersey looks great, all the way from the top of the collar to the bottom of the hemline
- Pulling the pant striping from the pattern of the away jersey really helps the consistency of the set
- Away is a big miss in my book.
- Recoloring the logo with red does not provide enough contrast against the yellow of the crown
- The striping faces a similar issue as the red and blue blend together and muddy up the look (Emphasizing white over red may help solve this)
- IMO the socks would look cleaner without the bottom filled in (more like how they are on the pants)
The Ugly (Execution Issues):
- Helmet logos are too large
- Regulation chin straps come in two colors, white or black. No blue
Overall Rating: 6.75/10
A decent re-brand that solves many of the Oil Kings issue, but one that creates some of its own.
Matt G.- Rockford IceHogs
The Good:
- Wonderful job using a unique striping pattern on the main set while still connecting to the parent team
- An alternate jersey is the perfect (and only) time that a minor league team should copy a jersey from it's affiliate
- Always love to see the NHL club's logo on at least one shoulder of their minor leaguers. Here we get a double dose
- One-color numbers look really nice on each jersey and the jagged font pairs well with the primary
The Bad:
- Primary logo is nice in a vacuum, but I could see a legal battle ensue between the IceHogs and the University of Arkansas Razorbacks if adopted
- Considering not even the Blackhawks wear their logo on their pants. I think it'd be best to leave it off and keep a common set between the two clubs
The Ugly (Execution Issues):
- The alternate's hem stripes would benefit from being shifted slightly upward so they dont overlap the AHL branding
- Pepsi logo should be credited
Overall Rating: 9.0/10
A wonderful update for the IceHogs that would put some distance between them and their Hawks copy-paste look.
This week I will once again issue a COTW Nomination, with Matt's IceHogs Concept receiving the honor this time around. As noted last week, be sure to check out the application for our Social Media Admin position and check out both the HJC stickers and Jersey Casual t-shirts on sale now (and keep your eyes open for the next round of Jersey Casual designs to be released tomorrow).
